The Goods Wholefoods is the goods

Our resident foodie Maryanne, loves discovering new places that pop up around Canberra and fell in love with the quaint but big in personality and flavour - The Goods Wholefoods which is tucked away in No Name Lane.

Founder and serious #bossgirl Klarisa Cengic, saw a gap in the market for fast healthy food and built The Goods Wholefoods from the ground up.

MI: How did you get the idea/concept for the business?

KC: So I had 80/20 with my sister and I was having a great time but after a while I wanted a change - wanted to venture out on my own and build something new from the ground up. I wanted to make the place healthy and I noticed that Canberra had a gap in the market for fast healthy food. We’ve got lots of beautiful cafes but I wanted something that was more grab and go but also with the option of having in. I think that the number of people becoming more health aware is growing which is great!

MI: What do you attribute your success to?

KC: I definitely think hard work is a big thing. You need to be willing to prioritise and just know that it will be tough. You need to put in the hours from the beginning and see it through. Constantly innovating is another one. Making sure that everything is staying fresh and that people are liking what you’re doing. I wouldn’t say that I follow food trends but we have a golden latte for example which people are responding to. The third thing is people, meaning my incredible team. When I started out I wanted it to be a place where people want to come to work especially in hospitality. If my staff are happy then I know my customers are happy. Also using the wider community to learn from whether that be talking or networking. I’m all about learning because I know that what I know isn’t always best. 

MI: What is your favourite item on the menu?

KC: I have created every single item on the menu so I am totally bias and I love everything! We are going to start doing soups and stews soon so I’m really excited about that! 

MI: What difficulties have you had owning a business and how have you overcome them?

KC: I wouldn’t say it’s a difficulty but I think the constant state of learning and refining. Negotiating my first proper commercial lease was really fun. Making sure you just don’t let the stress get the better of you.

MI: If you had one piece of advice to someone starting out what would that be?

KC: It is super rewarding running your own business and doing what you want to do. Being conscious that you need to allow yourself to switch off and have downtime, work hard, trust the people you employ and don’t try to do everything yourself. 

MI: What fashion item can you not live without? 

KC: My Lu Lus (laughs). 

MI: What’s a fun fact that our readers wouldn’t know about you?

KC: I’m allergic to avocado!

Porridge Berries & Banana 
Now I’m not usually a porridge gal but I do like my warm hearty breakfasts and anything that involves fruits! I have officially been converted. These porridges are the perfect portion size and include so many toppings which provide amazing textures and flavours.

Avocado on Toast
On previous occasions I had tried the pumpkin version of this brunch classic which I absolutely loved! What I love about their toasts is that the bread is large and soft. The avocado spread on top is so generous and you are most definitely full by the end of it despite it only being one slice!
