Fashfest | Day One | Show One

Light, camera, fashion! What a night for day one of Fashfest, 28 September 2017! We have put together our fave highlights for each of the shows for you to re-live. We hope you support these amazing talented designers and see what they do next.
I loved the minimal luxe look of this collection by Samantha Gehrich. Her pieces looked like quality and that is something everyone should be willing to invest in. I loved this collection because I could see myself wearing these pieces - to work and as separates on the weekend. Some of these pieces would be perfect for summer, skimming over your body silhouette - making the cooler months a breeze. If you love shift styles and muted simple tones Gehrich is one for you. Give me those dusty beige pants asap to add to my capsule wardrobe
Watching this collection really got me excited for summer, it reminded me of sitting by the pool - eating fruit tingles! So dam colourful. Maggie McGowan and Laura Egan nailed it with the prints! I love the bight bases with black prints that celebrates Aboriginal culture. I think that these pieces are also easy wearing, tuck them in to a pair of high waisted shorts put on some statement earrings and your ready for a night out in Summer.
Everything is better with sparkles! If you're looking for a WOW stand out piece - Bird Skin have got your back, literally. This ah-mazing electric blue jacket made me gasp! I could see myself wearing it. Perfect to you warm when bar hopping or attending a fancy fashion events. I couldn't STOP looking because the pieces were SO detailed - I didn't want to blink otherwise I would miss it! I can't wait to see what they do next!

Momento will debut on on the FASHFEST runway

Momento Dezigns has been dressing the women of Canberra for years. They stock some of the best designers Australia has to offer and can count on their team to find you the perfect dress for any special occasion.

This year Momento will make its debut to the FASHFEST  runway showcasing new season looks from their designer collections.

Ahead of their showcase we caught up with Momento to get a sneak peek of what will be on show and also to get all the goss on what will be trending this spring.

TFV: We are so excited Momento is making its debut on the FASHFEST runway. What can we expect to see down the catwalk?
Momento: So are we! We have such a beautiful show planned. It is extremely difficult to only showcase just 12 looks when we literally have a shop overflowing with goodies, especially at this time of year. So many people have requested to see Alex Perry on the runway so of course he will star but without giving too much away we have also included a race look by Ginger & Smart, corporate with a twist by KITX, the super affordable and stylish C/MEO collective, just to mention a few.

We will also be showcasing many more of our looks from casual to occasion in our collaboration with the New Zealand designers Trelise Cooper, Cooper, Coop, Curate and Sabatini for the Friday night of FASHFEST. These shows will be very special to us as they have been an integral part of the Momento Dezign’s stable of labels for many years and we are so proud to be able to present them to Canberra at FASHFEST.

TFV: What is the inspiration behind the looks that will be showcased?
Momento: We want to create a “show” worthy of our labels - stand out pieces that people don’t see every day. We want it to be “inspirational” for everyone.

TFV: Who do you think embodies the ultimate Momento girl?
Momento: There is no limit! No one look! Anyone who loves fashion; be it to admire or be admired in, or more importantly to wear – someone who knows that by looking good they will also feel good. All ages all sizes. Someone who admires style or likes to be styled! Someone who loves choice because we certainly have it.

TFV: What trends do you expect to see this coming season?
This Spring/Summer season promises the evolution of styles we already know plus the introduction of styles in a way we haven’t yet experienced.

Expect waves – be it ruffled sleeves, necklines or hems. This trend is set to be hanging around for a quite some time.
Cinching in the waist with standout belts.
Bralettes are showing under dresses and jackets (just may need the abs for them!)

Image: @momento_dezigns

The Power Shoulder, with yet another nod to the eighties, is back in both dresses and jackets.
Statement sleeves are continuing from the previous season, with a new take being the slit sleeve. Plus off the shoulder continues to show, even in shirting.

Pleats pleats pleats! In all fabrics and styles for day and evening. We love!
Stripes be they pintuck or nautical feature strongly in daywear. This trend is always fresh for Summer.

Kimono Layering and lots of Drawstrings – accentuating the waistline is back!
Florals are a given for Summer however this season they can be toughened up or worn flirty and feminine – no rules!
Dominant new colour trends are Khaki, Pink, Yellows and every shade of Blue – especially pale.
Khaki is redefining utilitarian street wear – dressing it up.
Yellow- so many options no matter your skin tone.
You will be seeing the colour pink from powder to hot in both block colours and florals.
What can we say about blues – they are everywhere from gaulois blue to the palest of soft light blues – always perfect for the Australian summer.

TFV:  What is your favourite designer collection you are currently stocking?
Momento: We love all our designers. It changes weekly or even daily especially at this time of year when all the new stock/ designers pour in. People can never believe the range of prices and style choices they can have in Momento. Because we stock such a large and varied collection of designers this is too hard a question to answer. We are of course naturally passionate about all our designers be they for day or evening. We are known for our enthusiasm and love of styling.

The Shirt Edit | 3 different dress codes

The humble shirt is a classic favourite and is no doubt a staple for many women in the corporate world but its style potential is overlooked. That's why it has been great seeing it come back into fashion and reinvented in so many different and innovative ways.

For me a shirt will always make you feel polished and well-dressed for work or for the weekend. Specifically a white shirt as it is timeless and one of the most versatile pieces you could own.

In our latest edit we decided to feature the style potential of  the humble white shirt and style it up for the 3 different dress codes - starting with Smart Casual, Casual and Corporate.

DJ picked a silk white shirt from TK Maxx | Canberra Outlet Centre for her Smart Casual look. This is a shirt I bet many women already have but may not think to wear it outside of work. Teaming it up with a masculine pair of pants creates a nice contrast to the femininity and delicacy of a silk shirt and gives the look a nice balance.

DJ styled this look with delicate light blue accessories picking up the colour from the pants but added a touch of masculinity to bring the whole look together with her trend shades from Le Specs.

What do you think would you wear this smart casual look? Keep an eye out for our casual look coming up next...

Spot On - The flowy top

I am still fiercely obsessed with bell sleeves at the moment. Let me tell you this… the bell sleeves will still be around this season AND I am excited by the comfort factor!
My pick? I chose this flowy top with the spots reversed, I wanted to lighten it up. As the weather warms, I don’t like wearing skin tight clothes – I want my clothes to skim over me and this top from Dotti is perfect for that.

Why it works? This one is super versatile because the cut is a little longer you can tuck it in to your jeans, belt it up at the waist OR layer it on top of a fitted dress. One top THREE ways = winning!!
Stylist Tip: If you choose to play with this trend, pick a smaller polka-dot print to avoid you looking like Mini Mouse ;)

Boss Girl - Annie from Miss Winks

There are many inspirational women out there who work hard to be successful. Their dedication and commitment is definitely something to be inspired by. Our first interview for this series is with Annie.

Annie from Miss Winks. Pic credit @wearefoundau
For those who don't know, Annie is the owner and master mind behind MissWinks an online lingerie boutique stocking intimates, jewelry and gifts from independent and Australian designers. On top of owning a personal business Annie also works as a Marketing and PR officer for QT Hotel in Canberra.

We hope you are inspired by her as much as we were. See the below interview with Annie.

Deejay: How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
Annie: It’s always been in the background I suppose. A few years ago I owned a boutique that stocked mainly vintage and also some designer labels and I always thought it would be fantastic to stock unique, feminine lingerie but the store wasn’t the right format at the time.

I then worked as a personal stylist and the importance of lingerie in making a woman feel beautiful and confident really struck me.

Deejay: What as your mission at the onset?
Annie: I wanted to source pieces that were different to the usual offerings you find in department or high-street stores.  I also wanted to support up and coming designers. These designer pieces are made with love and are high quality so it makes  sense to support these small small businesses.

I also want the experience to be fun! Miss Winks epitomises the duality of our nature- the girly girl, the feminine but also strong, sassy and mischievous.

Deejay : What do you attribute your success to?
Annie: I think I am still defining what success looks like. I just keep chipping away and keep the bigger picture in mind. I have goals, as we all do, and try to keep my daydream as the impetus to keep working hard.

Deejay: What difficulties have you had  owning a business and how have you overcome them?
Annie: It’s all about balance. I’m not always good at prioritising my wellbeing when I am busy but that’s really something that’s coming into focus. When you’re busy, sometimes self-care can be the first thing to go. I have seen my desire to do things differently as feeling a bit overwhelming at times but now I see it as a good thing.

I’ve balanced full-time work with a business, I’ve gone out on my own a few times and it’s not always easy but I know that this is what I am born to do. I feel it on a soul level. So, I can’t ignore that and I just need to ride the waves as they come.

Deejay: If you have one piece of advice to someone just starting out what would it be?
Annie: Put in the hours. Growing a business takes double the time and usually double the money you expected. There is no such thing as an overnight success, as much as it can seem that way. Also, have fun with it! Don’t forget why you had the dream in the first place. Take time for you, prioritise your physical and mental health. Be authentic. Do you.

Deejay: You also work full time, how do you find the time?
Annie: Sometimes I don’t feel like I do! I work in PR for a leading hotel group, which can be quite demanding, although really interesting and dynamic. I then work on my business in the evenings, on weekends, and in my sleep it feels like! You just have to do it to make progress. But I’m really passionate so that spurs me on.

Deejay: What is your goal for the next five years?
Annie: So many things! Growing my business to stock more labels is one thing. I also have an itching for design so watch this space! Personally, I want to travel more. It enriches my soul and enlivens my mind.

Things you might not have known about our boss babe Annie.

Deejay: What song or artist do you have on repeat?
Annie: I never really seem to have gotten past the 90’s and 00’s for tunes so you will most likely have me listening to some RNB or Hip Hop from then interspersed with Britney and the Backstreet Boys! What a dag.

Deejay: What fashion item can’t you live without?
Annie: Wow this is like naming my favourite child! I love leather…and black…so probably my leather jacket and skirt. So versatile. But my Moschino belt and Jimmy Choo satchel would probably be my most special staples.

Deejay: What is a fun fact that our readers wouldn’t know about you?
Annie: I can do a really convincing Bronx accent. I think I was a New Yorker in a past life. In fact, accents I can do pretty well- I’ve had fun with that!

Thank you Annie for your time your journey is inspiring to witness

You can see Annie’s fabulous curated collection at this years Fashfest. She will be showcasing on Saturday night, show 1 at  7:00pm.

Spot on - The wide leg pant

Spots are popping up all over the runways, street style, social media and in stores now! They are clearly having a moment this spring/summer. The question is will you also adopt this classic trend?

I think it's a trend that you have some fun with, but with any trend my advice is make it your own. Traditionally polka-dots have a feminine feel. To make this trend more suited to me I've opted to introduce a more edgy feel.

My take on this trend is a wide leg pant from Portmans at the Canberra outlet centre. I paired it back with a white tee (with rose embroidery because let's face it I need details) adding a a leather jacket to give it more of a tough feel.

Stylist tip: Don't loose yourself in trends. Let your unique style shine through.

Tallow and Thyme...Terrific!

It was 7:45 on a Wednesday morning and for a cafe that opens at the crack of dawn (7am) it was buzzing. Tucked away in Braddon, this cafe is super cute with both modern white and traditional brick walls and warm toned furniture. The quirkiness is accentuated with couches and little health signs around the shop. Everything on off is super fresh, healthy and organic with ready made meals available also if you’re in a rush.

I had the famous Sunrise Eggs Benny and it was a carb free delight. By that I mean they substituted the standard sourdough bread with mushrooms. Now I love the standard bacon, eggs and avo combo just like the next person which is what this dish was - but they took it to the next level. I did not have a vice like grip on my knife whilst trying to cut through a thick crust of bread. My knife cut through the perfectly cooked and flavoursome mushroom with ease. This twist on eggs on toast left my feeling deliciously satisfied. The salad on the side added a refreshing crunch whilst the bacon added a sliver of saltiness.

Jayne the manager is lovely and welcoming an ensured that I had everything I needed. The entire experience left me feeling warm and oh so wholesome.

It is the perfect way to start your day or whatever thyme (I had to) you’re feeling!

Gabrielle Spencer Bridal for the non-traditional bride

There is a new bridal label which is set to shake up the current bridal scene. Gabrielle Spencer Bridal will be making every cool-girl bride-to-be dreams come true.

I caught up with Owner and Designer Gabrielle ahead of making her debut on opening night of Fashfest to get a sneaky peek into her new collection.

What inspired you to create your own bridal collection?

Bridal has always been on the cards from me however in 2013, when I got engaged and was on the search for my own gown I realised the shortage in Canberra for a bridal label with a point of difference. I felt there was a very limited choice for something non-traditional, which is what I was after. So I decided to begin designing, in hope that one day I can open a boutique to capture the Canberra bride before she jets off to another city in search of a different yet stylish look.

What is the inspiration behind the collection you will be showing at fashfest?

The inspiration behind my first collection is simply, winter.

The collection includes garments suitable for colder climates, but also has many pieces which can be worn in all seasons. It has classical styles that are suited to a diverse age group and gowns that can be adapted for all kinds of venues.

The winter fabrics I am using in my collection are luxurious cashmeres, wools and silks. When I design I’m usually inspired by the fabrics first, so they were a big part of my idea to create the winter collection. Winter brides can be very glamorous, even with little skin showing.

What do you hope to get out of fashfest 2017?

I’m very excited to be a part of Fashfest 2017. I hope I can bring to light a distinct style that people will like and recognise so that I can keep designing for future Fashfest shows as I have so many more designs to show. I’m currently working on my summer range.

Tell us 3 things about yourself? How long have you been designing?

I grew up in Canberra, however I lived my 20’s in London and Brisbane.
I married the naughtiest kid at my school who is now my biggest support and fan.
My favourite thing to do is cook, and play with my two boys.

I studied Fashion Design in 2009 and had my first women’s wear collection in 2012. I had a small break away whilst having children (Joey 2½ years old and Elliot 1 year). My first bridal range has been a year in the making.

What is your ultimate bridal look?

My ultimate bridal look is ethereal, under-the-radar, cool-girl style. A few favourite pieces in my collection represent this style. It is relaxed and effortless, loose and flowy with a touch of sparkle.

Gabrielle Spencer Bridal will debut on opening night of Fashfest Thursday 29 September. Buy your tickets here.

Spot On - The Blazer

Polka dots are making a come back this Spring. Even though on trend, a polka dot print is classic and if styled correctly it can quickly become the staple print you can no longer live without.

Why it works? A smaller polka dot is flattering for any figure and works well to break up block colour. My pick? When shopping for this trend go for a classic garment such as a blazer.

I love this combo! You can't go wrong with throwing a blazer on top of (basically) any outfit to instantly feel well dressed and put together.

I teamed up this gorg blazer with jeans and a tee to show its versatility. This is the kind of blazer I would keep handy over the weekend for brunch with the girls or to feel polished when all I really feel like wearing is a comfy pair of jeans.

I could see how this quickly would be a fave staple for work and business meetings topped off with a bold red lip.

What do you think? Will you venture into polka dot land?

Sweeten my Bones

On a windy Saturday morning. I braved the weather for a dish that I’ve been on the hunt for, I craved a little taste of Sydney. Acai bowls are super common in Sydney and can be found almost anywhere, it’s a luxury that I like to indulge in after my coastal walks as it’s both nutritious and delicious.

As I walked in, I noted that the cafe was expectedly busy, a warmth was present in the rustic, quirky and cute interior. Although on this occasion the customer service wasn’t up to scratch with the staff being a bit below friendly, it should be noted that my food came out in record time. Our table which had just become vacant wasn’t cleaned until we asked if they could and following that they were punctual in fulfilling my request.

Super Hero... Burger Hero!

This burger joint is a hidden treasure tucked away in the streets of Braddon. I went there for dinner on a Tuesday nigh at 6pm and had purposely fasted that day in the lead up to my meal. I went in to try the freshly released special of that week - the onion rings and The Dirty Big Hero Burger and of course the classic criss cross chips which I couldn’t go past if I tried. It was pretty busy for a weeknight. It is a modern American style retro joint, with indoor plants and a red, black and white colour scheme. The seating is accommodating, with group tables for larger groups and then singular window seating which is where I wrote this piece.

The onion rings came out first and a healthy size to start the night off. They are not at all chewy and are so soft that they melt deliciously into your mouth. The sauce that accompanies them has a fun kick to them at the end and provides a fun flavour to the rings.
There is a reason that Burger Hero is famous for these chips. They are golden. They are crispy. They are perfectly salted. Essentially they are heaven.

The moment you have all been waiting for - The Dirty Big Hero Burger. This burger has 4 patties, you heard correctly. 4 patties. Now to be honest I was a bit hesitant, I had never attempted to try something so gloriously large. To sum up, it was simply delicious. The bun is oh so soft, the cheese melts through the layers. The patties are juicy and there is a surprise hash brown in the middle which adds salty goodness. You know when you’ve fasted all day and you start eating something so quickly because it’s so good and you’re scared it’s going to get cold and then - it hits you. Halfway through the burger I was contently full but I powered on. The burger combined with the chips and onion rings (if you dare) are an amazing but very filling combo so tread carefully.

Everything there is value for money, the portion sizes are filling; university students rejoice. The staff are all very friendly and the service is fast and efficient. These specials are only on for 2 weeks - so get in quick! Once again, Burger Hero saves the day.
