Our Top 12 Beauty Beauty Stocking Fillers

What’s small and fits in a soft boot looking thing that hangs over the fireplace?
Stocking fillers.
Lame ‘joke’ I know but seriously it’s pretty hard to find a good, useful stocking filler these days and are you not already out of ideas after buying other presents?
That’s where I come in.
I have 12 options (you know – because of the 12 days of Christmas).

1. VO5 hot oils. I’m a big believer in hair treatments and this is what I use as a quick one when I haven’t had time to leave a mask in overnight. You get 4 tubes in a pack and they contain avocado, apricot, grape seed, jojoba and rosemary leaf oils.

2. Swarovski crystal earrings – ok so this isn’t a beauty product but these are beauties. I got a pair for my birthday and now live in them. Who doesn’t love a bit of understated bling and these earrings will catch the sun and shine.

3. Rimmel Wonderfull mascara. I am using this mascara right now and love it. It has argan oil in it and with its moisturising properties, is great for stopping those lashes from falling out. It doesn’t clump and defines my lashes well.

4. Skin Republic collagen hydrogel under eye patch. All you need to do is leave them on for 30 minutes to add a bit of intense hydration to a very delicate area. You get 3 in a pack. I use it just before I’m going out or just when I feel it’s a little dry under the eyes. They’re pretty comfy to wear too.

5. Nars laguna bronzer is my go to for a natural bit of all over colour. I have used it for years and will last a while. Nars has also brought it out in a liquid form. You can also use it as a blush, on top of a little highlighter on your cheekbones.

6. A hair perfume is a little indulgent I know but this is what you get for the person who perhaps has everything else. Hair perfumes just need to be sprayed about 2 inches from the hair. A few sprays should do the trick.

7. Mac mineralize skin finish powder in soft and gentle is a beautiful highlighter and perfect for a little shimmer across the cheeks and temples. Highlighting is all the rage right now and this makes it easy to achieve.

8. Sinful colors is Kylie Jenner’s nail polish collection and there is such a big range of colours to choose from. The polish stays on quite well too.

9. Jurlique rose hand cream is beautifully scented and seriously – who doesn’t need another hand cream?

10. L’Occitane rose perfume roller is a subtle but gorgeous smell and can fit into most little handbags.

11. Lancome juicy shakers are actually lip oils and add a hint of colour with a bit of shine. There are so many shades in the range.

12. Shanghai Suzy lipsticks are one of my favourite brands. They all have individual, amazing scents and glide on so nicely. They have just brought out an essentials range in addition to their limited edition seasonal collections.

Happy shopping, Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

5 ways to stay looking, and feeling fabulous this Christmas

Christmas festivities have begun – and between work parties, family lunches, and drink catch ups with friends, it’s easy to see why, come January – our clothes are a little tight and we feel more sluggish than hoped. It’s hard to balance looking fabulous in your summer dresses, sandals and statement jewellery, with making smart choices around food and alcohol consumption. So I’ve put together a cheat sheet for you, because I am a strong believer in moderation and if I asked you to cut out everything this Christmas, I know exactly where you would tell me to go!  The key to continue looking fabulous this party season is to adopt the mantra, “swap it; don’t stop it!” By making some simple swaps and choosing healthier options, you won’t have to fear fitting into those skinny jeans come 1 January 2017.
1. Switch it up when your hosting a party
Instead of having chocolates, lollies and potato chips for guests this holiday season, try substituting them for some simple, yummy and healthy canapés! They are better for your waistline and are sure to increase your “host with the most” status. Some examples include:
Silverside, ricotta and dill canapés
Thickly slice and de-seed a Lebanese cucumber, sliced beef silverside from the deli is great to use, and goes a long way! Cut silverside into 2x2cm squares, place on top of cucumber slices, then add your ricotta mixture on top, consisting of low fat ricotta, a squeeze of lemon juice and a clove of crushed garlic mixed together. Top with a sprig of dill.

Spiced chickpeas
Rinse and strain a can of chickpeas. Coat them in a combination of your favourite spices, and bake in a moderately hot (180°c) oven for 30-40 minutes. My favourite mix is ground cumin and coriander, nutmeg, a pinch of salt and garam masala. If you don’t like chickpeas, try this exact recipe with cubed sweet potato! When you take the sweet potato out of the oven, stick a tooth pick in each – and you have yourself another delicious canape!
Tomato, Haloumi and basil skewers
Fry haloumi and cut to squares to fit nicely inside halved cherry tomatoes, stick a tooth pick and top with basil.
Get creative and play around with fruit and vegetables, a little goes a long way and they are colourful, flavoursome and healthier options than traditional canapes and snacks.
2. Swap your alcoholic drinks
Overindulging is never a good idea when it comes to alcohol, but if you are going to drink, making some simple changes to the drinks you consume can save you between 200-400 kilojoules (50-100 calories) per drink!  Try swapping your sugar laden cocktails for a mimosa or a sparkling wine, ciders for a rosé or gin (or vodka!) and soda with fresh lime, and if you’re really daring try a whiskey or scotch on the rocks – cutting out mixers altogether helps you pace your drinking a bit better. Remember to always have a glass of water in between drinks.
3. Choose healthier options when eating out
When you eat out, opt for the meat or fish with vegetables or salad option as opposed to the pasta, risotto, pizza, or noodle dish.  Serving sizes in your favourite brunch spots, cafes and eateries can sometimes be almost twice the size they should be. If there are small dishes, or light meals opt for those instead.
4. Make time to move
It’s the perfect time of year to swap that extra sleep in and get up 20-30 minutes earlier to move. Whether it’s for a run, walk, swim or HIIT session, keeping active actually makes you more inclined to behave when eating out.
5. Eat slowly, and listen to your body
It’s easy to forget how hungry you actually are when you’re catching up with family and friends. Try to stay mindful, eat slowly and listen to your body. The slower you eat, the more likely you are to recognise when your body sending you signals that you’re full.
Remember that when you feel fabulous from the inside, you look fabulous on the outside.

Activated Charcoal – A Beauty Detox

It’s possibly one of the most bizarre but effective beauty products and has been around for centuries.

You’ve got to love a product that stands the test of time.

It’s activated charcoal and before you get all freaked out, it is carbon but it’s treated and processed to make it face friendly.

It’s so good for the body it’s used in the emergency departments of hospitals to treat people who’ve been poisoned – food, drugs, alcohol – because it draws out the toxins and impurities and removes them from the body.

This is pretty powerful stuff and the beauty version pretty much does the same thing.
The charcoal is one of many ingredients in a product and it attracts dirt, oil and other impurities for a good detox and thorough cleanse.

It unclogs and tightens pores, improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of fine lines, helps treat acne, whitens teeth, can lighten the skin and exfoliates because of its grainy texture.

Being black, it’ll look pretty gross and is a bit messy but when you rinse it off, you rinse off the bad stuff to leave your skin looking amazing.

Once all the dirt is gone, it’s the perfect, clean base so other products you use will work better because they can penetrate deeper. That only means better results.
Here are some of the products on the market that will cover almost every aspect of your beauty routine.

Biore deep pore charcoal cleanser foams up and draws out impurities for a clean feel.

Boscia’s charcoal pore miminising hydrogel mask contains bamboo charcoal, offers a deep cleanse, focusing on your pores which will improve your overall complexion and skin tone.

Clinique also does a mask. The pore refining solutions charcoal mask is a complete skin detox, getting right down into the layers of the skin for an improved complexion. It absorbs oil for a mattifying result.

IT Cosmetics has its bye bye pores primer. It’s anti-ageing and hydrating and is ideal under makeup.

Warpaint charcoal tooth polish is to be honest a little gross because your mouth will go black and look really weird. It’s effective though and completely non-toxic, rather containing 100% natural ingredients. It’s a teeth whitener and will also strengthen enamel and remove toxins. If you’re not keen on this, you can get yourself a charcoal toothbrush.

Available from The Body Shop is Spa of the World – a Himalayan charcoal body clay so the rest of your body can look as good and be as healthy as your face. If the full body clay is too much for you, there are a heap of charcoal soaps you can buy.

Hask has come up with a purifying charcoal shampoo. It also contains lemon and grapefruit oils to clean and clarify the hair. These shampoos will be great for people with dry scalp.

I recommend you start small with charcoal, perhaps with a single sachet mask to see how you like it. While most of the products out there are all natural, you should patch test on your skin before using anything new.

Easy Tips and Tricks to Effortless Summer Hair

The right hairstyle can sometimes help you a great deal in achieving a fab look. We have some good news for all the ladies who prefer casual chic: hairstyle trends for this season are all about effortless curls and loose buns. Although these styles aren’t too demanding, here are some tips on how to get the most out of them with minimal effort.

“I woke-up like this” look
Many would agree that the curly hair is the hottest one. It’s compatible with almost every look, giving it the perfect final touch. It’s especially good for everyday combinations: it can light up a classic business outfit or give extra fun to a more casual look when going for a coffee with friends.

The best versions of wavy and curly hair don’t require special skills. The main rule is that there is no rule, so you can experiment with these hairstyles as much as you like without worrying that you’ll do something wrong - quite the opposite, imperfections are more than welcome.

You can curl your hair by dividing it into small buns which should be fixed with a hair mousse (the size of the curls will depend on the size of the buns). Sleep with them on and, in the morning, just loosen your hair and shake it a little bit to get this cool look.
To get a romantic, wavy hairstyle use a hair straightener you probably already have. If you don’t, consider getting a GHD hair straightener, from one of the leading brands of hair styling products, well-known for its high performances. Start from bottom layers toward upper ones and simply clamp a cowlick, flip the barrel of a straightener and run it up your hair. You can also use a flat iron for creating waves by clamping it a few inches from the root of your hair and rotate it with your hand. Unclamp it after several seconds and reposition it below the previous one (and so on). When the waves are completely cool, gently shake them with your fingers (don’t use a brush under any circumstance, otherwise you’ll look puffy).  By using a straightener, you won’t damage your hair too much and you’ll get a more natural look.
If you have a center parted haircut, try to move it on one side. This asymmetry will give you an unconventional look and it can also add a unique effect to your appearance.

Effortless elegance
One of the most elegant hairstyles – buns - are coming back this season with a twist, in form of effortless knots. They’re most suitable for medium or long hair, so if you find yourself in this group, you should definitely try out some of these looks:

Grab a section of the upper hair layer and divide it into two parts. Tie them in a knot and leave one of them hanging loose, while the other should be secured with bobby pins.
Make a knotted ponytail by knotting two sections of your hair and then knotting it once more. Secure it with bobby pins and, if you like, make a plait.
If that sounds like too much effort, knot the simplest low bun and enhance your look with one of the hottest trends from this season’s runways - boho and baroque style hair accessories: headbands, tiaras, jeweled bobbies, etc. This way you’ll make any outfit glamorous and chic.

With these simple tricks, you can follow the latest hairstyle trends without having any trouble with it at all. Find the one that suits you best, but also feel free to improvise. After all, what is an effortless look if you have to put a lot effort in it?

Be festival ready!! Spilt Milk here we come!

Here are our top 5 tips to get yourself ‘Spilt Milk’ ready!
1. Wear sunscreen. Thanks to the Cancer Council, you can slip, slop, slap and be protected from the sun. You can find the sunscreen near the information booth and the Helping Hands tents.

2. Fake tan it up! Our skin hasn’t really seen the sun for a while so avoid the pale skin look – tan it up with our new fave, Rimmel tan (I’m wearing the dark one).
3. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated!! In between all of the delicious refreshments, be sure to top up on the waters too! There will be free water station’s around the event site, keep a lookout for those.

Left leg, no tan and right leg tanned.

4. Make your eyes POP! Seeing as though you will be in a sea of people, I think the only thing that really will be seen will be our beaming, happy, faces SO make sure your eye game is strong. We will be wearing some of the new shades from Rimmel’s Magnify ‘eyes, eye shadow pallet (Insert WINK here).

5. DON’T FORGET TO… Screen shot the copy of the set times and the map, so you can run from stage to stage and know exactly when sticky fingers will play!

At @Designerdresshireaustralia you can choose from some of the most exquisite dresses (to name a few) Mary Katranzou, Balmain and Chanel. I would highly recommend considering hiring a dress for your next event. I mean this has changed the way I dress for events. Designerdresshireaustralia allows you to strut it out in your high-end designer dress, then post it back (they will take care of the rest). It's super easy. The hard part is choosing what dress to wear!

I felt like a million bucks and the dress fit like a glove, I was so confident. Can't wait for the next event Designerdresshireaustralia - come at me!

Who What Wear - Colour pop

Simon Anau, manager or Peter Jackson men's wear gives The Fashion Vault some summer styling tips for men.

"My philosophy is to live in colour. In the store I aim to introduce my clients to coloured blazers and pants, while steering away from the traditional black suit," he says.

"For those who are initially uncomfortable with the idea of colour, I slowly introduce them to it by adding coloured accessories to their look, such as lapel pins and pocket squares to ease them into experimenting with colour.

"Some of my favourite trending colours at the moment are green and orange."

Beauty Editor Review: RIMMEL #scandaleyes Liquid Liner and Mascara

#Scandaleyes Precision Micro Eyeliner

So believe it or not, I had never used a liquid liner until this product came to me. I love a creamy pencil for its ability to smudge and for how easily you can wipe it away and start again when your eyeliner effort goes a little awry. I’m also a fan of the gel eyeliner because it’s so bold and to me, not as scary as going full liquid.

Anyway, I gave it a go. What I love about this eyeliner is that it is so easy to use - perfect for liquid liner beginners. It has a thin tip and you can easily glide it on for a delicate line. The brush thickens out and you can use that part to create a thicker line. This is perfect if you do make a mistake because it allows easy correction which was great for me on those super rushed mornings. It dries quickly which is great.

It’s also really easily removed with micellar water or a cleansing oil, both of which I use.

What I wasn’t so fond of was the colour. Yes it’s black but not a very intense black so I did have to go over the line a few times to get the stand out, bold look I was after.

I’ll probably go back to my pencils after three months which is when you should throw out liquid or gel liners and mascara. I haven’t been turned off liquid liners, but will probably give a different one a go next time.

#Scandaleyes Reloaded Mascara

I am super picky with my mascaras because the idea of my eyelashes falling out because of a product that dries them out, that clumps causing them to stick together or is so hard to get off that my lashes come out too, is a little scary and far from ideal.

The packaging for this mascara I was given says it will provide extreme volume and wear and is easily removed, just with warm water. That last bit intrigued me.

The mascara coats the lashes well and has quite a big brush that is thick down the bottom and tapers inward at the top. This type of brush helps thicken lashes. After a few coats the lashes are evenly spread and there is not much clumping that needed to be brushed over.

It definitely has a high impact. By the end of the day though, the mascara dried out a little.

I tried removing it with warm water and while it came off, I was left with massive panda eyes so needed to use micellar water anyway. I didn’t try that again.

Before being given this mascara I was using another Rimmel product which I bought myself – wonderful mascara with argan oil. Argan oil is nourishing, conditioning all types of hair so I was thrilled to find out about it. I love it and will probably go back to using it instead, purely because I find it better for my lashes.

Making a Statement by Janette

Any one who knows me, can guess my favourite accessory is a statement piece. One that takes your outfit straight to POP! My look is colourful and polished, my style is bold.

I love to make a statement and my friends do too! I get a lot of comments about the pieces I wear and I wanted people to have access to that. A lot of my friends kept telling me, that they would love to wear what I wear. So I thought I would make that happen.

My 'Statement Collection' has been carefully picked by me. I have sourced them from all over the world and numbers are limited, it would be rare if someone was wearing the same piece as you!

These pieces are bold and bright. Make a statement with whatever you're wearing, a simple t-shirt or bright colourful dress and POP!

You can checkout my statement collection at Mussen - 9/70 Garema Centre, Canberra City 2601.

Race Day Beauty: Our Editor Tips

When it comes to race day makeup, less is always more. I mean you’re wearing it for the whole day and don’t really want to be spending too much time fixing up an elaborate look.

Here’s how to keep your makeup looking its best through sunshine, wind and rain.

It all starts the night before where I recommend a moisture surge for your skin. Go for a moisture rich mask and then sleep in a hydrating serum or night cream.

After moisturising as normal on race day, apply sunscreen. This is a rule that should never be broken. Add a primer which will set your makeup and keep it in place.

Go natural when it comes to foundation. The glowing, barely there look is perfect for Spring and a day out. You’ll need a light dusting of powder to set it and help it last. Chuck a compact in your bag if you need a few touch ups across the day.

Add a pink highlighter along your cheekbones, over the temple (and across your hairline if you want). If you have darker skin, opt for a light brown. You can add a little blush in a pink or bronze to the apples of your cheeks.

I recommend a light brown or gold eyeshadow. You can use a darker brown to make it a little smoky if you’re feeling adventurous and confident in your abilities. Eyeliner above your top lashes will make your eyes stand out. Add a line below the bottom lashes for some added drama.

If you go a little darker on the eyes, pick a nude lipstick. Another option is a bright pink if lips are more your thing.

Something to consider to make life easier is a long lasting, moisturising lippie. I’ve just tried Harlotte liquid lips adding a bit of lip gloss on top for some shine and it stayed on for hours.

Makeup done, let’s switch to hair and again keep it simple. Soft waves are so beautiful and will blend so effortlessly with a crown or headband, without demanding the attention.

If you’re opting for an elaborate headpiece that’s the centre of your entire outfit, get out the straightener and keep it sleek. You can also tie your hair back.

However you choose to do your hair and makeup, do what makes you feel good and have fun!

FashionXHyatt: Food and Fashion

Food and fashion – up there among the most important things in a woman’s life and they were both on show at the Hyatt Hotel Canbera - A Park Hyatt Hotel, last Saturday, with the aim of bringing Canberra’s creatives together.

Fashion parades featuring Canberra models and designers were a special addition to the regular, decadent afternoon teas the hotel puts on.

The nation’s capital has a not so secret creative side brimming with talent and ideas and it’s this that prompted Clint and Andrea Hutchinson from Fashfest to join forces with the Hyatt for the luxury indulgence event.

Braddon tailors showcased their suits in classic black and a navy three piece, both must haves for any man looking to impress whether at work or out on the town, or a fella who just wants to feel good.

The pocket square is definitely something that should be a more regular feature when dressing up.

Karen Lee opted for muted tones with the pieces she dressed models in. Her Designs are remaining, flowing and elegant in their simplicity.

Zilpah Tart gave us colour on the catwalk – think a gorgeous sunset – and floral which are always big in Spring.
Her designs have a romantic feel about them and my favourite from the fashion show was something a little more edgy – the black shorts number with the flowing train. What an outfit!

You have to give it to Jade Sargent, the woman behind Sovata, for her incredible millinery creations.
They’re grand and gorgeous with the perfect pops of colour or you can go for black and white – both of which she showcased on the catwalk. She also designs clothes and they have a vintage look to them that flatter any shape.

Ladies and gents, just in time for Spring racing season, this gives you a taste of what to wear and trust me, you can’t go wrong.

Dressing for the Races: Our Style Tips

The Spring racing carnival is here and it's the best time of the year to get dressed up! I love race wear style as it emphasises head-to-toe dressing incorporating hats and headwear. Traditionally there are dress guidelines to follow when planning your outfit especially if you intend on entering Fashions on the Field and I love this because it means fashionistas nation wide pay close attention to every little detail when putting together their outfits.

In preparation for this year's biggest race days I have turned to the who's who of trackside glamour for inspiration and have put together some handy tips to keep in mind when planning your outfit.

This is the race day to turn embrace your elegance and think chic, sleek and refined. When it comes to style, this is my favourite race day as the traditional black and white dress code evokes elegance and creativity with choice of flattering silhouettes, textures and details.

Stylist Tip: Go for modern pieces and look to current trends for inspiration. Show a little more skin or try a pant suit as you will still look the part provided you follow the black and white dress code.

Shop The Look:

The most popular day on the racing calendar and the day where you can really step up your style and be bold. Melbourne cup is all about colour and pushing the boundaries of traditional race wear and having fun with your head wear - which is what race day style is all about!

Stylist Tip: Dare to be different and challenge your own individual style rules and have fun with your outfit! Don't know where to start? Then try sticking to a feature element as your base - such as a headpiece, crazy shoes or a bright coloured dress and plan the rest of your outfit around that element. If you are a little colour shy (like me) try sticking to a monochromatic look (one colour) or block colours of two or three complementary colours.

Shop The Look:

A race day for the ladies and host to the fashions on the field finals which makes this day as much about fashion as the racing itself. What a perfect day to indulge your inner lady and embrace your femininty and also celebrate Spring. Think pastels, girly spring colours, lace, soft silks, flowers and spring inspired headwear.

Stylist Tip: Treat yourself and look into a bespoke headpiece in beautiful spring inspired textures such as sinamay, mesh, flowers or add a hint of sparkle with a jeweled head piece. If you are not a fan of girly silhouettes opt for a tailored or body con dress to embrace your femininity and simply add a pink or red lip.
